Paideia e ginnasi in Egitto ellenistico e romano
This publication brings together the proceedings of an international colloquium organized by the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Milan and the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Pavia, which took place in September 2022, aiming to investigate, in the light of important recent archaeological discoveries, as well as of the current historiographical debate, the institution of the gymnasium in the cultural, political and social context of Egypt, first as a Hellenistic kingdom, then as a Roman province.
The volume addresses the relations between gymnasium and military training, its central role in the Hellenization of an area of the ancient world with a strong national identity, and the cultural transferts operating within it. It tackles the problem of access – more or less restricted – to such a vital institution in the social life of a progressively transforming elite, and the role of the Judaic component of the population involved in the paideia imparted in the gymnasia, both at Alexandria and even in the villages of the chora. All these themes are addressed and investigated from the context of the Ptolemaic reign to that of the Roman province, with the aim of better defining the meaning of this institution, which emerges from the Egyptian evidence with original nuances, and is still open to multifaceted discussion and interpretation.
