Quando muori resta a me
by ZerocalcareA trip with his father to the small village in the Dolomites where his father’s family is from would be the perfect excuse to better understand Parent 2, but Zerocalcare and his father are unable to talk to each other about anything meaningful. This makes the trip difficult, when it becomes clear that their family is not looked upon favourably, indeed hated by some, in the village. The roots of hatred go back to before the Great War, and are intertwined with the mystery surrounding, for thirty-five years, the most mysterious and emblematic day in Calcare’s life, what he remembers from childhood as ‘Merman’s Day’. In the interstices of the unspoken, the unwavering love of a father for his only son traverses some of the darkest pages of our country’s history, silently courageous. A story in which Zerocalcare forces himself to look in the mirror and makes no concessions in recounting what he sees.
