The Vermouth of Turin

Vermouth has ancient origins, but it was in the shadow of the Mole Antonelli that it acquired the voluptuous characteristics that have made it world famous. And with the denomination vermouth di Torino, on March 22, 2017, it became a product with geographical indication (GI). Through extensive research, including ancient texts and new documents, experts and enthusiasts will understand the magical alchemy that transformed a medicinal wine into the king of aperitifs, thanks to the union of plant knowledge, winemaking and distillation. The book deepens the study of the raw materials and the method of production, completed by the historical types produced. A large space is dedicated to curiosities, anecdotes and publicity, in order to better understand its social role, starting with the “vermouth hour” at the end of the 19th century. The text concludes with a detailed description of historical producers, brands that have disappeared and those that are being reborn. Finally, it describes a number of cocktails in which vermouth is the protagonist, including the Americano, Negroni and Martini Dry cocktails. Turin Vermouth was named one of the top ten books in the world on drink culture in the 2019 edition of New Orleans’ Tales of the Cocktail.
