From the first illustrated textbook, published by Comenius in 1658, to trading card albums and Pokémon, the scholastic world as well as that of the media have questioned the use of images in the field of education. Illustrated alphabet primers, posters, boards for Chutes and Ladders and collecting cards all have in common a more or less explicit educational intentionality, namely seeking to communicate cultural information and content, facilitating the learning of specific knowledge, making interesting an historical topic or scientific concept. This is a vast field of investigation involving didactics, communication sciences, media pedagogy, infancy literature and the disciplines which study images.
