Atlante Pinocchio. La diffusione del romanzo di Carlo Collodi nel mondo
by Autori variThis volume faithfully reconstructs the global circulation of Pinocchio and its stunning international success from its publication in 1883 to this day. Divided into 96 chapters and embellished with six rich iconographic pathways, the Atlas recounts the long journey of a book that still speaks to readers of differing cultures, languages, religions and traditions. The focus of this volume is directed towards the complete translations of Collodi’s book; there are also, however, numerous references to the presence of Pinocchio in the collective imaginations and the cultural lives of entire peoples, from television and cinematographic adaptations to the illustrations in its various releases and theatrical reductions. From the European to the Asian Pinocchio, from the ‘dark’ puppet of many translations into African languages to the character who travels between North America, Latin America and Oceania, the Atlas traces the history and geography of a literary text that has not known (and continues not to know) boundaries, through faithful translations, adaptations, rewritings, and reductions. The Pinocchio Atlas presents itself as a bona fide critical and historiographical enterprise, capable of recounting the legacy of a book born in Italy but whose reach has come to span the globe. An undertaking only made possible by the collaboration of over 140 scholars and which, with its arrival in bookstores, coincides in an ideal manner with two important anniversaries: 140 years since the first edition of Pinocchio (2023) and 200 years since the birth of Carlo Collodi (2026).
