“Nel 1947 è stato pubblicato un libro ancora oggi molto importante, e anche molto bello, che tutti dovrebbero aver letto o leggere, prima o poi. Il libro si intitola Se questo è un uomo e lo ha scritto Primo Levi, un chimico di Torino appena tornato dal campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. Levi aveva 28 anni.
Nel 1947 io sono nato e sono passati 75 anni prima che, durante una passeggiata in un bosco di faggi, cominciassi a pensare a un albero come a una specie di fratello.
Non solo un essere vivente, ma proprio un fratello. Noi, se ci pensate, respiriamo, mangiamo, ci riscaldiamo e ci proteggiamo dalle intemperie grazie agli alberi, eppure li trattiamo così male…
Allora ho fatto questo libro e ho pensato di intitolarlo Se questo è un albero anche pensando a Primo Levi. Gli alberi non parlano, o perlomeno noi non li sentiamo e non capiamo cosa dicono, così questo libro è senza parole. Le parole, se volete, potete mettercele voi.”

Guido Scarabottolo (Milano, 1947) Laureato in architettura presso il Politecnico di Milano. Attivo dal 1975 come illustratore e graco, ha collaborato con i maggiori editori italiani, le principali agenzie di pubblicità e la RAI. Dal 2002 progetta e illustra le copertine di Guanda, con cui ha pubblicato anche Una vita. Romanzo metafisico (con Giovanna Zoboli), e Note. I suoi disegni escono regolarmente su Internazionale e sul „Sole24Ore“ e irregolarmente sul „New Yorker“ e sul „New York Times“. Per Vànvere edizioni ha pubblicato Bestiario Accidentale (2012), Manifesto Segreto (2014) e Viva il mondo! (2018), Manifesto Segreto-2 (2018). Vive e lavora a Milano.
If this is a Tree
“In 1947, a book that is still very important today, and also very beautiful, was published, which everyone should read, sooner or later. The book is titled If This Is a Man and was written by Primo Levi, a chemist from Turin who had just returned from the Auschwitz extermination camp. Levi was then 28 years old.
I was born in 1947 and 75 years went by before I began, during a walk in a beech forest, tothink of a tree as a kind of brother. Not just a living being, but a brother. After all, we breathe, eat, warm ourselves and protect ourselves from the elements thanks to trees, and yet we treat them so badly… So I made this book and thought of titling it If This Is a Tree also thinking about Primo Levi.
Trees don’t speak, or at least we don’t hear them or understand what they say, so this book is wordless.

Guido Scarabottolo (Milano, 1947) He has been working as an illustrator and graphic designer since 1975, he has collaborated with major Italian editors like the RAI advertising agency. His work is released on a regular basis in important Italian magazines such as Internazionale, Il Sole 24 Ore. His work is occasionally released in the New Yorker and in The New York Times. For Vànvere edizioni he published: Bestiario Accidentale (2012), Manifesto Segreto (2014), Viva Il mondo! (2018), Manifesto Segreto-2 (2018). Foreign rights for all languages available.

“1947年，一本至今仍极为重要且震撼人心的著作问世——都灵化学家普里莫·莱维从奥斯维辛集中营归来后写下的《这是不是个人》。那年莱维28岁。
也是1947年，我出生了。直到75年后的某个午后，当我漫步山毛榉林时，开始将一棵树视为兄弟。
树不仅是一个生命体，更是兄弟。想想吧：我们呼吸、吃饭、取暖、遮风避雨，全都拜树木所赐，但我们却如此恶劣地对待它们……
于是，我创作了这本书，并决定以《这是不是棵树》为题，向普里莫·莱维致敬。树木不会说话，至少我们听不见、听不懂，因而这本书没有文字。但如果你愿意，那些树木未说出口的词语，由你来完整。”

圭多·斯卡拉博托洛生于1947年，毕业于米兰理工大学建筑学，自1975年起活跃于插画与平面设计领域，长期与意大利主流出版社、顶尖广告公司及意大利国家电视台（RAI）合作。2002年起为观达出版社设计封面，其间亦出版作品集《一生：形而上学小说》（与乔凡娜·佐博利合著）及《笔记》。其插画定期发表于《国际报》与《24小时太阳报》，并散见于《纽约客》与《纽约时报》。由万韦雷出版社出版《偶然动物》（2012年）《秘密宣言》（2014年）《世界万岁！》（2018年）及《秘密宣言2》（2018年）。现居米兰从事创作。
