Non esisto

by Schiavone Alberto
Non esisto

A woman comes out of a gate. It is that of the prison, where she has spent long years of her life. In there, there has been one story, and outside waiting for Maria there must be another. What direction will her life take now, which imprisonment has broken in half? Maria tries to pick up the thread of her existence with stubborn abandon. Sleeping, eating, working: mundane activities that prove terribly difficult in a world that knows punishment but not forgiveness, that turns a blind eye to creatures on its margins and in which people like Maria simply ‘do not exist’. Yet Mary tries, even when everything seems to be falling apart, when evenloving is difficult in all that freedom in which human beings move, almost always unaware of how hard it is to learn to swim without anyone to teach you, keeping you suspended over water.Alberto Schiavone sketches a figure of a woman who is both tender and fierce, and places her in the most contradictory field of action, the one poised between right and wrong, between freedom and prison. She throws a question at us: is the long-dreamed of freedom really waiting for Maria, or just another fence? But above all: when the cage is opened, is it really possible to take flight?
