Targa Florio: 61 ritratti de La Siciliana
The “Targa Florio”, the oldest car race in the world created in 1906 for a wish of Vincenzo Florio, Sicilian industrialist and Patron, was for decades, not only the most desired world car championship, but has also represented the strong historical and cultural identity of a society, the Sicilian one, which has gone through an age of changes and transformations with a brave and brilliant spirit. A history made by great champions, from Nazzaro to Nuvolari,up to, more recently, our “flying headmaster” Nino Vaccarella, whose epic deeds along the “Grande Circuito delle Madonie” characterized that period. A period during which the racing cars, born from the geniality of great men, like Ferdinand Porsche, Enzo Ferrari and many more, kept pace with the industrial and technological progress of a society represented by the “Targa Florio” under several points of view. During these years, many books and publications have deal with cars, drivers and history of the “Targa”, but, this is a very different and particular initiative.I t’s a reconstruction of the “Targa Florio”, using the Francesco Accardi’s illustration with texts by Roberta Zarcone, which traces the years of constructors world championship up to 1977, with a collection of watercolours inspirated by tales, images, papers of those days. We will find all the drivers, all the protagonists of an event that has become legend all over the world. From Felice Nazzaro to Divó, from Tazio Nuvolari to Gendebien, from Nino Vaccarella to Elford. The history of the Targa Florio is also the history of the cars that have made it great: Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche and many other brands in which we came across this artistic and literary walk in the history of sports and cars.
