Uto e Gesso

by Dal Lago, Gabriella
Uto e Gesso

It’s nighttime. Two brothers in their twenties are sitting in a car stuck in a layby full of snow. Their names are Uto and Gesso, or at least that’s what everyone calls them. They have just visited their mother and her new partner, but things have not gone well. Uto accuses Gesso, the oldest brother, of being selfish and monopolising everyone’s attention on himself. Enraged, Gesso gets out of the car and sets off on foot towards the nearest rest area, despite the snowstorm. Emma, also in her early twenties, works there. She, too, has a story that she wants to keep secret. That rest stop becomes a waystation on a journey that will take Gesso beyond the guardrail and into the woods: the place where the search begins for a brother who has decided to lose himself. Will shouting his name into the mountains be enough to keep everything from sliding away?
In her debut novel, Gabriella Dal Lago tells the story of a night that slips into the past and spills over into the future: Uto and Gesso is about the ghosts that haunt everyday life and the people that stay behind to protect them.
